A break in rehearsals…

We are delighted to introduce our new horn player, Kate Mill, who joins us for the first time on 11th April for an exciting programme including the first complete performance of Nick Cartledge’s

Light for Wind Quintet.

Nick Cartledge, flute

Nick is one of the most versatile flute players of his generation, excelling in classical, jazz, pop and commercial music. He studied the flute at the Royal College of Music in London. During his time there he won the Tagore Gold Medal and made his Wigmore Hall debut. He was the first ever flautist to win the Royal Over-Seas League music competition.

Nick works widely as a freelance orchestral musician, soloist and chamber musician across the world. He is also in demand as a session flautist for films, TV and albums and regularly records at major London studios. Nick is also in demand as a composer/arranger.

Sylvia Turner, oboe

Sylvia’s musical training began at the Junior Department of the Royal Academy of Music and continued at the University of Southampton and post-graduate Advanced Study Course at the Royal College of Music.

She enjoys a varied freelance playing career on oboe, oboe d’amore, cor anglais and occasionally bassoon. This has included solo recitals, concertos, chamber groups, a wide range of orchestral playing, shows, recordings and a number of first performances. 

Sylvia was a Practical Examiner for Edexcel 2000-2024, and has a busy instrumental teaching practice in Surrey and Hampshire. She particularly enjoys running chamber music groups for both adults and children.

Neil Hickling, clarinet

Neil is a graduate of London’s Trinity College of Music, where he studied clarinet and eighteenth-century clarinet with Keith Puddy. He also holds a Master’s degree in Performance Studies from the University of Surrey. 

With over twenty-five years of professional experience as a clarinettist and saxophonist, Neil has taught at the Royal College of Music and the Universities of Oxford, Surrey and Exeter as well as at schools and colleges across Surrey and Hampshire.

 As an orchestral musician, Neil has worked with many outstanding artists and conductors. In 2002, Neil co-founded the quartet Ensemble 4, with which he performed an eclectic repertoire across the UK and abroad, including a number of his own arrangements.

 Neil is currently a principal member of the Chameleon Arts Orchestra and clarinettist with its associated ensemble, the Chameleon Wind Quintet. He also performs regularly with a variety of freelance symphony and theatre orchestras, as well as appearing as a recitalist.

Sarah Price, bassoon

Sarah studied the bassoon at the Royal Academy of Music and the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. She won the bassoon prize at the RAM in her second year, was a finalist in the Shell/LSO competition and received awards in competitions in Prague and Munich.

She then returned to London to build a freelance career which has included work in most of the major orchestras of England and Wales and trials for permanent positions, including Principal of the LPO, LSO and BBCNOW. She now divides her time between orchestral playing, chamber music, examining, coaching and teaching.

Kate Mill. horn

Kate studied horn at the Queensland Conservatorium in Australia with Peter Luff, graduating with a Bachelor of Music (Honours) in Performance. 

Following her studies, Kate performed with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra before moving to London to pursue further musical studies and develop her career as a horn player. 

Since relocating to the UK, Kate has enjoyed a varied career as an orchestral and ensemble musician, performing with a number of distinguished ensembles and orchestras, including the Northern Sinfonia, Academy of St Martin in the Fields, Oxford Sinfonia, and the St Endellion Festival Orchestra.
